Black unglazed yokode kyūsu Japanese-style teapot
Black unglazed yokode kyūsu Japanese-style teapot
Though kyusu simply means "tea pot" in Japanese, in the west it is often used to refer specifically to yokode kyūsu- side handled tea pots that allow for easy pouring without touching the hot surface of the pot. This kyusu holds about 165ml and features a clay mesh strainer inside to filter the tea leaves from the water when pouring.
The unglazed nature of this teapot means that it will develop a patina over time, seasoning the interior of the pot with whatever type of tea is most often steeped within- however this also means greater care is required to keep it clean. Never leave wet tea leaves in the pot for an extended time to avoid the growth of mold which could penetrate the unglazed surface. Made of black stoneware and fired to 2232°F/1220°C. Hand washing is recommended.
All pieces are handmade in Chicago IL by Dani Fogarty.
